Grama (who was very biased in my favor) and many health care professionals (who were decidedly not biased in my favor) often commented on how patient I was with the obstacles and activities older folks endure. On more than one occasion Grama said I should write a book to help other people cope with their loved ones getting older. Everyone seemed to think it was a good idea. So when Grama left the building, my priceless husband said I should go back to school to get a degree to help me do just that. Turns out The University of Tampa was launching their brand new and beautifully shiny graduate degree program in Instructional Design and Technology. I enrolled in the first cohort of incoming students and again, my life was never the same.
Grama helped me to cultivate a very specialized type of patience; patience with the hardships of aging. Surprisingly, I didn't have too difficult a time being patient. Grama was young when I was born, mid-forties. Even in my youngest childhood memories she was very active and we had many adventures. So when it came time to put up with the inevitable obstacles of aging I really didn't mind being patient. How could I not return the favor? She had been patient enough to teach me to shine an apple on my shirt, make the perfect ice cream cone and she repeatedly flew with me on a very long flight from Florida to California so I could visit my extended family.
