Generally speaking, I approach instructional design in a holistic and systematic way. I utilize the Morrison, Ross and Kemp model and andragogical practices in my design activities. I believe instruction should recognize the life context and personal characteristics of the learner population. I believe designers hold the responsibility for applying these characteristics and relevant theoretical concepts to design activities that place learners in active roles where the instructor facilitates learning opportunities and guides the student in manipulating and learning from these opportunities. It is critical to engage learners, not just keep them busy.
Research is a significant force in instructional design because it is only through constant review of emerging technologies that we can ensure we are applying the most relevant and sound theories and techniques.
In addition to my instructional design practice, I see an increasing need in society for realistic solutions that will alleviate the needs of geriatric individuals who are isolated from resources and/or personal support. Based on ongoing neurological research, I believe there is a significant opportunity to increase quality of life for the aging by leveraging instructional opportunities. My mission is to revolutionize the way our society copes with aging by addressing the emotional, physical and social changes that occur naturally as we age. This is my passion and my life's work, which is a very long-term project.
